
Why Won't My Door Latch? Common Causes and Fixes

A door that will not catch properly is more than an annoyance. It can leave your home or shop unsecured, turn a quick trip outside into a lockout, or put strain on the handle and lock every time you force it. If you are asking, “why won't my door latch?”, the cause is usually a small alignment or mechanical problem - but it is best dealt with before it becomes a broken lock or damaged frame.
The first rule is simple: do not keep slamming the door or forcing the handle. That can crack a UPVC gearbox, bend a latch, loosen hinges or damage the keep in the frame. A few careful checks can help identify the issue. If the door is locked shut, the handle will not move, or the lock feels as though it may fail completely, it is safer to call a locksmith before trying to dismantle anything.
Why Won't My Door Latch? Start With the Door Position
A latch works only when the spring-loaded bolt lines up with the hole or metal keep in the frame. If it is hitting above, below or to one side of the keep, the door itself has moved out of position. This is one of the most common faults we see, particularly on older timber doors and heavier composite or UPVC doors.
Open the door and look at the latch bolt. Then close it very slowly while watching where the bolt meets the keep. If it hits the edge rather than entering cleanly, alignment is the problem. You may also notice that lifting the door slightly, pushing it firmly towards the hinge side, or pulling the handle upwards makes it latch temporarily. That is useful evidence, but it is not a long-term repair.
Loose, worn or dropped hinges
A door can drop gradually under its own weight. Screws may loosen in a timber frame, hinge pins can wear, and UPVC or composite doors can settle after changes in temperature. The result is a latch that sits too low for the keep.
On a standard hinged door, check for visible loose screws and see whether the gap around the door is uneven. A larger gap at the top hinge side, or rubbing along the bottom edge, often points to a dropped door. Tightening a loose screw may help, but screws that no longer grip properly need a more considered repair. Simply fitting a longer screw can split a frame or catch hidden wiring in the wrong place.
UPVC and composite doors usually need adjustment at the hinges or keeps. The exact method varies by hinge type, so random adjustments can make the door harder to close or affect the weather seal. A locksmith who regularly repairs UPVC doors can set the door back into position and check that the multipoint lock is not under strain.
Swelling, movement and weather
Timber changes size with moisture. After prolonged rain or damp weather, a wooden door can swell enough to catch against the frame and stop the latch reaching the keep. In hot, dry conditions, the opposite can happen: movement in the door or frame may leave the latch misaligned.
Look for fresh scrape marks on the edge of the door, paint rubbed away near the frame, or a door that is noticeably tighter at one corner. Do not start planing chunks from the door straight away. Seasonal movement is sometimes temporary, while a persistent issue may be caused by poor hinge alignment, a warped door or movement in the frame. Removing too much material can create draughts and make the door look unsightly when conditions change again.
Check the Latch and Handle Before Adjusting the Frame
If the latch lines up with the keep but does not spring out, the fault may be inside the handle or lockcase rather than in the door position. With the door open, press the latch in with your thumb. It should return smartly when released. A slow, sticky or weak return is a warning sign.
On a traditional mortice latch or sashlock, dirt, old paint and a worn internal spring can stop the bolt moving freely. On a cylinder-operated night latch, the internal mechanism may be worn or the latch may be set to the hold-open position. With a UPVC, composite or bifold door, a stiff handle can indicate a problem with the multipoint locking mechanism or gearbox.
Do not spray thick oil, cooking oil or general-purpose lubricant into a lock. It can attract grit and make the fault worse. A suitable lock lubricant may ease a dry mechanism, but it will not repair a broken spring, worn spindle or failing gearbox. If the handle feels floppy, has excessive movement, or needs lifting and jiggling to make the latch work, arrange a repair before it fails with the door shut.
The strike plate or keep may be loose
The metal plate in the frame is sometimes called a strike plate or keep. It takes the force each time the door closes, so its screws can loosen, particularly in a softwood frame. A loose keep may move just enough for the latch to miss it.
Check whether the plate is secure and whether its opening is clogged with paint, splinters or debris. If it has shifted, you may be able to see a shiny mark where the latch has been striking its edge. On a simple internal door, minor adjustment may be straightforward. On an external door, however, the keep is part of your security. It must be firmly fixed and positioned so the door closes properly without leaving a gap or allowing excessive movement.
Problems Specific to UPVC, Composite and Bifold Doors
Modern doors use more than a single latch. A UPVC or composite door often has a multipoint lock with hooks, rollers, bolts and a central gearbox. Bifold doors have their own alignment and locking hardware, which can be affected by track movement, loose hinges and worn handles.
If you can close the door but cannot lift the handle fully, do not force it. The locking points may not be lining up with their keeps, or the gearbox may be starting to fail. Forcing the handle can turn an adjustment job into an emergency opening and replacement mechanism.
Try closing the door with the handle operated while it is open, only to observe whether the locking points move freely. Do not leave the mechanism thrown out while the door is open, and do not repeatedly operate it if it is grinding or sticking. If the door works open but binds when closed, alignment is more likely. If it is stiff in both positions, the mechanism itself needs inspecting.
Bifold doors deserve particular care. A minor drop in one panel can affect the whole run, leaving locks unable to meet their keeps. Because the panels, rollers and track all work together, a quick adjustment to one hinge is not always the answer. Proper alignment protects both the lock and the door system.
When a Door That Will Not Latch Becomes Urgent
Call for help promptly if the front or back door will not secure, the key will not turn, the handle is jammed, or you have to leave the property unattended. The same applies after an attempted break-in, when a bent keep, split frame or damaged lock may look minor but leaves the door vulnerable.
For landlords and business owners, do not rely on a tenant or staff member wedging a door shut overnight. A door that does not latch can affect security, fire safety and insurance obligations depending on the property and entrance involved. Temporary measures are sometimes necessary, but they should be followed by a proper repair.
A locksmith can assess whether the fix is a hinge adjustment, latch replacement, keep realignment, new cylinder, gearbox repair or carpentry work to the frame. The right answer depends on the type of door and where the wear has occurred. A good repair makes the door close easily, lock without force and sit securely against its seals.
